The world is your Oyster when you network

One of the biggest opportunities in PR is networking.

Now, networking isn’t just a case of going into the local boozer and striking up a conversation with someone you vaguely know. Networking is so much more than that. It opens doors for you and it makes you knowledgeable about your city and the people within it.

It’s also a lot of fun.

At MK, we encourage the whole team to take advantage of any regional networking opportunities that arise; this may be a case of stepping into the Lyon’s Den, becoming a member of the Junior Chamber or venturing out to other cities to see what is on offer there.

And why do we do this?

For our clients, for our own personal development and, of course, for MK…

By networking you are giving yourself a chance to be seen and be heard. You represent your company and your clients in different circles that you may not have come across beforehand. You are putting yourself out there, into the unknown at times, and building up your own communications skill set.

Sheffield is known as a village within a city. Everyone knows everyone, and a lot of that is down to the connections people make at networking events.

A year ago, I knew very few people in Sheffield so I decided to make a change and stepped into the unknown. Through taking that first step, I now know people working in different sectors – not only in Sheffield, but across the region and many more opportunities have come my way because of it.

It may be a little scary at first, but once you have taken those steps, there’s no turning back. Your diary will be full of events, seminars and training and one day you’ll wonder: “What did I spend my time doing before?”
